About the Model
This large sculpture of George Washington by Horatio Greenough is also called the "Enthroned Washington." It was made for the centennial of U.S. President George Washington's birth on February 22, 1732. Washington is portrayed as bare chested, his right hand and arm points to the heavens. His left hand cradles a sword, symbolizing Washington turning over power to the people after the American Revolution. The writing on the back translates to, "Horatio Greenough made this image as a great example of freedom, which will not survive without freedom itself."
